Frequently Asked Questions

Sisterlocks™ is a trademark company founded in 1993 by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell after years of research to perfect this unique hair locking system. This technique simply creates a stable woven framework in a lock of hair within which the natural interlocking process can take place. It uses your own natural hair — no glue, waxes, gels, chemicals, or extensions.

Yes! Sisterlocks™ is a lot less limiting than extensions because it is your natural hair. You can curl it, braid it, wear a ponytail, cut it, spray or mousse it, wear bangs and parts – You name it!

The initial locking process takes about 2/3 as long as getting extensions of comparable size. Other factors that will affect the length of the initial locking session are: hair length, density, condition, size of head and lock size desired.

Yes you can! That’s how I started. I can help you make that transition. Your styling options will increase as your natural texture grows out. You can view my journey here.

The answer to that one is no. With a fresh head of Sisterlocks™ you are going to see some parting. Even if the client has very thick hair, there will still be some parting.

It depends on the rate that your hair grows. Usually within the first three weeks or after your first shampoo you will notice your parts filling in. Thinner hair takes a little while longer.Describe the item or answer the question so that site visitors who are interested get more information. I don’t recommend coloring before your Sisterlocks™ are installed. You should wait until the locks are settled in or well on their way. If you color your hair before your hair is locked you will run into trouble trying to touch up your color while your locks are settling.

Many people claim to provide Sisterlocks™ or something “just as good” for a much lower price. Don’t settle for a copycat, or StepSistah locks.

If you are dealing with a reputable Sisterlocks™ consultant, your quoted price should include the Consultation, Locking Session, and Follow-up Visit/1st Retightening.

The consultation should include… installation of sample locks, viewing of at least one of the original Sisterlocks™ videos, a review of the Consultation Portfolio, explanation of the starter kit which will be given to you after the installation, and as many questions & answers as it takes to make sure you have a good understanding of the process.

Your consultant should have Sisterlocks™ hair products available for you to purchase. If a consultant can’t sell Sisterlocks™ products to you, that’s a big RED FLAG! She may not have gone through the proper training, or she may have become inactive and no longer in good standing with the Sisterlocks™ home office. Plus, you never know what other elements of the Sisterlocks™ system she’s not offering.

These are standard practices for a good consultant who is in good standing with the Sisterlocks home office, cares about your hair, and wants to make sure you understand the requirements to care for your Sisterlocks® /Brotherlocks®.

Make sure you are dealing with an officially trained Sisterlocks™ consultant or trainee. There is no substitute for the real thing!

For more info, or to find an officially trained consultant (certified or trainee) in your area, visit the Official Sisterlocks™ web site, or feel free to contact me. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have, or to set up a consultation appointment.

Contact Sandy

I used to dread getting my hair done in a home environment; unless it was my home because of all the interruptions involved with being at someone’s home (kids, calls, emergency store runs, etc.). Didn’t have that problem here. Sandy was all about business. Nothing interrupted the session except break time which surprisingly wasn’t many nor were they length you would expect after so many hours. I am not sure if I was the one doing the work I could have held up as well as she did.
